Founded in 1844, Renji hospital is the first hospital practicing western medicine in Shanghai after its opening as a treaty port. Currently, the hospital comprises four campuses in the east, west, north, and south, as well as the Shanghai Cancer Institute. It is a comprehensive Grade III Class A hospital that boasts a complete range of disciplines and integrates medical care, teaching, and scientific research.

The east campus is located in the Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone in Pudong, which was completed and put into use in October 1999. The west campus is situated in the Central Business District of Huangpu District, adjacent to the Bund. The south campus is located in Pujiang Town, Minhang District, which was completed and put into use in December 2012 and fully integrated into Renji Hospital on October 20, 2020. The north campus is located at the intersection of Juye Road and Lingshan Road, which was fully operational in July 2013. Shanghai Cancer Institute is located on Xietu Road, which officially merged with Renji Hospital in October 2010, forming a unified "institute-hospital" system.

Since its establishment, the hospital has boasted two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The hospital boasts 13 national clinical key specialties, including Gastroenterology, Gastroenterology Key Laboratory, Obstetrics, Cardiology, Neurosurgery, General Surgery, Urology, Nephrology, Medical Imaging, Rheumatology, Allergy, Transplantation, and Critical Care Medicine. It also has one "flagship" department for integrated Chinese and Western medicine under the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Nephrology Department). In 2023, the hospital secured 492 projects with a total funding of 212,270,753 yuan, surpassing the 100 million yuan mark for 11 consecutive years. Among them, 161 projects were funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. In 2022, the hospital continued to rank among the top domestic medical institutions in terms of the Nature Index, ranking second nationally in Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FC) (27th globally) and second nationally in Article Count (AC) (54th globally). The hospital has also won numerous national science and technology progress awards, Chinese Medical Science and Technology Awards, and Science and Technology Progress Awards of Colleges and Universities. Hundreds of staff members have been included in talent development programs at various levels, including 973 Chief Scientists, Changjiang Distinguished Professors, young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions from the Ministry of Health, National Outstanding Youth, and leading talents in Shanghai.

In 2010, the hospital became the first batch of standardized training bases for resident physicians in Shanghai. In 2013, it became the first batch of specialized physician standardized training bases in Shanghai. In 2014, it became the first batch of national standardized training bases for resident physicians. In 2014, the Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine was established, which is the first Sino-foreign cooperative education project officially approved by the Ministry of Education in China. In 2018, the hospital was awarded the first batch of National Clinical Teaching and Training Demonstration Centers. In 2019, the Sino-French College of Surgery was established, and the clinical medicine undergraduate program was certified by the Ministry of Education. In recent years, the hospital has been awarded the first batch of Chinese laparoscopic surgery training bases, the first batch of national first-class undergraduate courses, the Ministry of Education's curriculum ideological and political demonstration courses, and the second batch of national first-class undergraduate courses. The hospital focuses on building an excellent physician training system, with 28 doctoral programs and 34 master's programs currently available. The hospital's teaching building has a total area of 6,508 square meters. The simulation training center was established in 2003, and received the title of "National Clinical Skills Center" in 2013. In 2018, the training center was officially inaugurated, covering a total area of 2,300 square meters. The hospital has also actively responded to national strategies such as the high-quality development of the Yangtze River Delta integration, taking over the comprehensive management of Ningbo Hangzhou Bay New Area Hospital (Renji Hospital Ningbo Branch) and Nantong First People's Hospital New Hospital (Renji Hospital Nantong Branch), and jointly built the "National Medical Center for Digestive Diseases" (Renji Hospital Anhui Hospital) with the Second People's Hospital of Anhui Province.
